Monica di Sardegna ‘Karel’
Tasting notes
Monica di Sardegna D.O.C. represents the gentler side of the island’s winemaking tradition.
Winemaker’s notes: Ruby red color with purple tinges. Intense and elegant fruit scent while the taste is mellow and round with good tannins.
Food pairing: Roasts, stews, fresh and medium mature cheeses.
Additional information
Production: 2.4 kg grapes per vine, maturing 5-6 months in stainless steel tanks.
Thought to be of Spanish origin, nowadays Monica principally comes from Sardinia where it is the second most cultivated red variety. It tends to make medium bodied, fruity (cherry-driven) wines for early consumption, with a nice element of freshness through its acidity and slightly bitter tannins. Karel is very characterful, not only having the typical structure of Monica but also offering some intriguing drier fruit notes. Recommended to try drinking it cooler on its own or serving it with fish. Karel also combines well with pizzas and pastas with tomato sauce.
